Brewery / events space.
The Old Coal Yard (formerly J A Potts & Son Scrap and Waste Merchants) has been transformed in to the home of local Craft Brewery Northern Alchemy Ltd. Its main and primary function is as a working Craft Beer Brewery. As with many Breweries the ancillary use of the space at weekends as a taproom and event space allows for the continued trading of the company especially in the post-pandemic trading environment.
The use of the building during the weekends has become an important community resource. The Old Coal Yard has become a hub of creative events that focus on supporting the LGBTQIA+ and Global Majority communities offering free use of the space for fundraising and social events. Their ability to offer this to these communities is supported by their small programme of live music and hosting of celebratory life events (examples: affordable weddings, birthday celebrations, baby naming ceremonies and the like). However regardless of the nature of any event there is a continued focus around their primary function: the production and sale of Craft Beer produced on site.
In the early days we assisted with feasibility studies and spatial planning. More recently we managed a planning application for change of use of the building involving procurement and coordination of specialist reports relating to transport and acoustic issues and liaised with Planning to eventually secure an approval for the site.
